Santa Baby

Ok, so everyone that knows me is aware that I am not Christian and don't celebrate Christmas (or any holidays for that matter). I have a particular abhorrence for Christmas, not because it is a religious holiday—I have no problem with people expressing their faith. But Christmas now is little more than a time of materialism, misplaced priorities, and a feeding frenzy for the retail business.

However, there are few public places one can go without being blasted with "secular" Christmas music. (I would much prefer classical, traditional choral music.) I am pretty good with blocking out what doesn't interest me, but the catchy song Santa Baby grabbed my attention. I started asking people who was singing it. Nobody had a clue, nor, really paid much mind to the words. Of course, in public it is often difficult to understand the lyrics.

Anyhow, I am never content to dismiss my curiosity unsatisfied, so I started doing some research. Quite a bit, actually, and came up with some cool info that I have to share!

Santa Baby is a big band style song with a swing rhythm written in 1953 for the gorgeous black singer/dancer, cabaret star, comedienne Eartha Kitt (1927-2008). It’'s a humorous and sexy song poking fun at Christmas greed and materialism. Numerous artists have recorded it, including Maria Muldaur. Later artists such as Madonna and Kylie Minogue gave it that "Betty Boop" sound (especially Madonna). Kylie's version is by far the best, next to Eartha's original.
