I have lots of fun materials on these special fantasy beings and you can find them all on this index as I get them onto my site. But are they all fantasy? Well, no, not really. Wicca, or witchcraft as a spiritual practice has become very popular in the New Age, as has Shamanism, which is a type of witchcraft, I suppose one could say. These are not black arts, they are healing arts, practiced for the good of humankind, and protection to the practitioner.
This index also includes people who were persecuted as witches in Salem, Massachusetts, especially, by the Puritans in early America. Nathaniel Hawthorne works these into his books frequently, not because he supported their persecution, but to point out the stupidity of it all. Plus, it includes stories with southern beliefs in witchcraft and superstitions, often written in a humorous way.
And as for the other creatures, such as mermaids and dragons, I wouldn't state my life that they are complete fantasy either. I think everything has a base for the believers, and there's a lot about the original life on this planet (or perhaps off-planet) that we don't know, or prefer to not know, in many cases.
I also want to point out that fairies, elves, and gnomes, for the most part will not be included here, or monsters, such as vampires and werewolves. They have their own indices. Please see the Cross-Reference, Resource Index to view all the indexed categories. I am also not listing books here that are specific collections of myths, such as classic Greek or Roman, or Nordic. Those also are found under their own category. Coloring books, however, will be included. For the same reason I am not including classic fairy tale books, coloring or otherwise, because they all have fantasy creatures, and also have their own index.
