France, French Revolution, French Art, Literature, Culture; Belgium

Throughout history, France has been an extremely important and influential country, often setting the standards for the rest of the world; fashion, cuisine, art movements. The French Revolution at the end of the eighteenth century was not only a drastic change for France, but it enraged many other European countries as well. Here are a few tidbits about France from Wikipedia.

It is the 42nd largest country in the world, the largest in the EU and western Europe; the 20th most populated and second most populated in the EU. It is secular and democratic. Their Constitution: Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen was formulated during the French Revolution which abolished feudalism and the monarchy. France's colors are blue, white and red.

When I began this index, I didn't realize what a whopping amount of material I owned related to France. Here you will find books written by French authors and translated into English; books about or set in France; art and design with French origins; and important people from France. I am also including Belgium, though I don't have much specifically from that country. Because I have so many works by French people, I am grouping my materials according to author or artist, in no particular order of date or importance, but simply what I happen to have in my library. For writers or artists of which I have only one work, I will display as usual, by category (i.e. fiction, non-fiction, etc.). Be sure to read Thomas Carlyle's fascinating book on the French Revolution and follow the links to Wikipedia. Enjoy this great material and the beautiful paintings by French Impressionists.
