I like Dot Barlowe's coloring books, and I really like the way she arranged this one. It is done in the form of a story that begins as the sun rises in the desert and ends with the rising of the moon. She goes through each part of the day, explaining what the animals would be doing, and covers a huge variety of flora and fauna. I especially liked the end, and found it challenging to create the illusion of moonlight on the desert sand and rocks, and how the creatures would look in the light and shadows. I remember when I was completing this book, there was a full moon on the night I did the last picture (the one with the coyote). I was able to out at the moon and really notice the pattern of grayish splotches that I had't thought much about previously. Another interesting aspect of this book is Barlow's use of "above and below." She does it with the shrimp in the second picture, and elsewhere with other creatures that burrow into the sand to keep cool in the scorching sun. Here is a list of illustrations:
