Dover Coloring Book

Text Box with description of Book

This is really a clever book. LaFontaine has taken 22 constellations (the Zodiac, plus ten more) and placed the stars as you would see them in the sky, then outlined them to form the image they represent, as seen on the book cover. Then, on the adjoining page, he creates a scene using the character(s) of the constellation. When I ordered this book, I had no idea what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised when I saw it. In addition, LaFontaine provides information about the legend of each constellation. He also includes a summer and winter sky map inside the front and back covers with the constellations shown.

I am a big fan of LaFontaine's coloring books, and I own a good many of them. His car books are awesome, but he has done space and underwater exploration, trains, bridges, buildings, and many more subjects. If there was one criticism I have of this book, it would be that his figure drawing is not as good as his drawings of inanimate objects. But it is still a cool book, and can be enjoyed by colorists of all ages.

When I was coloring, I experimented with different ways to do the "sky view" version of the drawing. I like the way it looks on the cover, but there's no way to get the white-on-black look because the drawings are, of course, in black. With each of the pictures I chose to post, I have included both versions.

Shown first are Leo the Lion, and Capricorn, the Sea Goat. With Leo, I outlined him in gold, then used crayon to fill in. For Capricorn, I used two colors of glitter crayon— one for him and one for the pattern of the stars.

With Orion the Hunter, I simply outlined the stars with glitter crayon, and colored him with metallic crayon. For the two bears, Ursa Major and Ursa Minor (which is also the Big and Little Dippers) I colored the stars with silver pencil, then outlined the bears in black glitter crayon. I colored them and the background with metallic crayons.

For Perseus the Hero, I outlined him and the stars in several different colors of metallic pencil.
